Santa Monica, CA
The mixed-use project is located in the city of Santa Monica. This will house 50 apartments including affordable units which sit atop 12,000 sqft of commercial space at grade level. The simplicity of the building shows in the form, in the rhythm of the openings, and its quality material palette, which is a combination of metals and concrete. To break up the mass and the scale, an opening/cut is provided, introducing greenery, which connects the residential courtyard to the street. The building is set back from the street (at grade) allowing for an enhanced pedestrian experience, and to counter the simplicity and balance, a series of thin and round columns are located in the ground level. These generate an ordered rhythm and start to become playful and eccentric as they approach the corner of SM and Yale.
